Annual Report, 2008
The last year has proven to be one of significant
change for our small district. Several development
proposals continue to wind through the approval process
with at least two nearing fruition: A 34 unit
building in the 100 block North Butler Street as well
as a 71 unit building in the 300 block of North Hamilton
Street are on the cusp of construction. With
any luck, we will have many new neighbors to welcome
at some point in the next year to these two new buildings. Additionally,
another proposal, also in the 300 block of North Hamilton
Street, calls for the construction of one building
containing nine apartment units. The district
also welcomed the relocation of the historic Conklin
House from West Johnson Street to the 500 block of
East Mifflin Street.
In celebration of Earth Day on April 19th, many volunteers
from the district as well as from Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood
Association gathered to help tidy James Madison Park
in order to freshen its appearance after a particularly
difficult winter. Speaking of James Madison Park....potential
change is underway. The committee of neighborhood
residents, city officials, and concerned individuals
formed to assess the status of the homes remaining
in the park proper has its initial meeting in a few
weeks.
The district is pleased also to announce that monthly
meetings are firmly scheduled for 7:00 PM on the third
Wednesday of each month, with the last several being
graciously hosted at Bellini Italian Restaurant on
the corner of East Washington Avenue and North Hancock
Street. Please join us.
Welcome
to the James Madison Park District! We
were formerly part of the Old Market
Place Neighborhood Association. We
are now a new district which goes
from Butler Street on the West
to Blair St on the East to East
Washington on the South and Lake
Mendota on the North. We
are pleased to be a part of Capitol
Neighborhoods, Inc (CNI).
Our district is named after James
Madison Park because it is a
place where members of the
community can gather for fun, sun,
and relaxation. Those
who gather at the park are a
diverse group of people from all
walks of life and in this
way the park is representative
of our district.
The park is not the only attraction
our neighborhood has to offer,
of course. We have many businesses
as well, from a health club to
convenience stores and more.
We encourage everyone in the
district to be a part of CNI.
It is a great way to find
out what's going on in the neighborhood
and what to do if there is a problem.
If there are concerns about
safety, traffic issues, the sidewalks
being covered in snow, community
members will know who to contact
to help get these issues resolved. Plus,
it's a great way to get to know
people.
We take care of the garden at
the park above the stairs between
the two towers, so if anyone
has a yen for gardening please
get in touch with Ilse Hecht (283-6000.)
